ZAPPANALE #23 -- 2012

a message from the Arf Society

Dear friends,

due to absolutely unforseen changes in the German Horse Race calender we are obliged
to change the date for Zappanale #23 2012.

We are really sorry about this and do hope that none of you will have difficulties with the new
date.

The new date for Zappanale#23 is: august 1st until august 4th, 2012.

ADDITIONS TO THE PATRICK O'HEARN DISCOGRAPHY

I've added covers and data for the following Patrick O'Hearn albums.
Nice to know = that the "Trust" album features Patrick's former Missing Persons buddies Warren Cuccurullo and Terry Bozzio.

HECTIC WATERMELON - THE GREAT AMERICAN ROAD TRIP

Today, the search for zappa-esque music brings us Hectic Watermelon.
Hectic Watermelon is John Czajkowski's band and it's described as "a Post-Zappa, commando-fusion band from San Diego/Los Angeles ... ".
On "The Great American Road Trip", the Hectic Watermelon power trio (John Czajkowski - guitar ** Darren Debree - drums ** Harley Magsino - bass) is joined by electric violin legend Jerry Goodman.

It's jazz. It's fusion. It's progressive rock. And it's indeed very zappa-esque compositionwise.

A great discovery.

OTHIN SPAKE - CHILD OF DECEPTION AND SKILL

I mentioned both Othin Spake's first album "The Ankh" (from 2006) as their third album "The Nethack Dictionary" (brand-new) the last couple of days, so it's only logical that I'm adding the data for Othin Spake's second album as well.
Improvised rock music with Teun Verbruggen (drums), Mauro Pawlowski (guitar) and Jozef Dumoulin (fender rhodes).

MORGAN ÅGREN UPDATE

Trey Gunn, Henry Kaiser and Morgan Ågren are releasing "Invisible Rays". The album will be out in a couple of weeks on the 7 d Media label.

Bill Laswell, Raoul Björkenheim and Morgan Ågren released "Blixt" on the Cuneiform Records label. The album is out !!

In a couple of months, Belgian label Off Records will be releasing the first album by The Kings Of Belgium (Pierre Vervloesem, Gilles Mortiaux and Morgan Ågren)

The Mats / Morgan Band "Live" album has been re-released by Cuneiform !!

BRUNO VANSINA - NIRVANA BONUS AND THE DEMONS OF SHAME

Bruno Vansina, who you should know as one of the saxophone players of Flat Earth Society, released another album on his RAT Records label.
"Nirvana Bonus And The Demons Of Shame" is a fine, weird little album. Experimental rock and jazz elements are mixed with a fine dose of humour.
I like it.
Bruno Vansina on vocals and saxes; Billes Mortiaux on guitar and vocals; Pieter Vandenberghe on keyboards; Teun Verbruggen on drums; and Pierre Vervloesem on bass and vocals.
http://users.telenet.be/brunovansina/RAT/releases_CD.htm#bonus

OTHIN SPAKE - THE ANKH

Take three experienced musicians:
Teun Verbruggen (Jef Neve, Flat Earth Society, ...) on drums, Jozef Dumoulin (Mââk's Spirit, Octurn, ...) and Mauro Pawlowski (Evil Superstars, dEUS, ...) on guitar,
let them play a completely improvise set,
and you get an exceptional record.

Energetic, powerful drumming, spacey keyboards, and sharp guitar lines.
Experimental rock? Free jazz?
It's Othin Spake, and it's worth checking out!

http://users.telenet.be/brunovansina/RAT/releases_CD.htm#ankh

TOO NOISY FISH - FAST EASY SICK

Peter Vandenberghe on piano, Kristof Roseeuw on double bass, and Teun Verbruggen on drums, that's the line-up of Too Noisy Fish. In this classic piano / bass / drums setting, the threesome offers an interesting album.
"Fast Easy Sick" is a fine piano trio jazz album. It got released on the (Vansina / Verbruggen) Rat Records label.
Worth checking out.

FREAK OUT IN TURNHOUT

“Strip Turnhout” is the name of bi-annual comic book festival that is held in Turnhout, a small city in the north of Belgium. During the two days of the festival, Strip Turnhout welcomes approximately 15.000 visitors.

During the festival several expos are held in and around De Warande, Turnhout’s cultural centre.
And I am happy to tell you that the next edition of Strip Turnhout will feature “Freak Out In Turnhout”, an expo by the C.I.A., a french group of comic book artists.
The C.I.A. (Confrérie Intergalactique des Arts) will present comics that have been inspired by (the music of) the late Frank Zappa.
And to make it even more interesting, composer & trumpet player Bart Maris (X-Legged Sally, Think Of One, Flat Earth Society) has agreed to perform at the expo on Saturday afternoon.

Wowie Zowie. This will be great.

NEW DWEEZIL ZAPPA ALBUM

DZ says...

"Our fall ZPZ UK tour is swiftly approaching and along with preparing the music for the tour I have also completed a special project called Dweezil Zappa - Live "In The Moment."

It's a double CD compendium of excerpted guitar solos culled from the last 3 years on tour. I've selected performances that symbolize the musical growth I've made as a guitarist. I also wanted to emphasize the variety of tones and textures I've been working with. Not only have I been able to recreate some of my favorite FZ tones but I've stumbled onto some new guitar tones of my own. The celloesque tone bows it's way on to the scene along with some expressive delay soundscapes and extracurricular dynaflanger madness.

The mixes are from Front Of House References (FOH). Having listened to all of our FOH mixes I've found some great examples where they are well balanced and made a record out of them. There's even a track where the kick drum is quite deficient and the local crew did speak Italian, nevertheless the guitar solo was inspired and this is the only authorized recording of it. When things cannot be multitracked FOH refs become master recordings and sometimes capture amazing performances. Because of that very reason I chose to examine the FOH recordings that fit that description and make this record.

Dweezil Zappa - LIve "In The Moment" will be produced in limited numbers and will be available very soon! Cal Schenkel is working on the artwork and as soon as that is ready we will be planning to manufacture the discs and plan a release date.

Will it be ready for the UK tour? All crossable parts are crossed..."

THE CLAUDIA QUINTET + 1 - WHAT IS THE BEAUTIFUL?

On their sixth release, The Claudia Quintet pays tribute to avant-garde poet and artist Kenneth Patchen.

If you're unfamiliar with the work of Kenneth Patchen, be sure to check it out. It's fascinating. Appearantly, Patchen did not just write poetry. He wrote novels, worked together with John Cage, and with Charles Mingus, and he painted so-called "painted poems".

On "What Is The Beautiful?" John Hollenbeck celebrates Patchen's birthday (December 13 , 1911) by putting his poems to music. And John did a great job.

John Hollenbeck's contemporary, jazzy pieces fit perfectly with Kenneth Patchen's catchy and funny poetry. The slightly changing, repetitive lines create a intemate atmosphere, serving as a soundscape and guideline for Kurt Elling and Theo Bleckmann who recite and sing the poems. Very impressive.

As on their previous CD, the album is credited to The Claudia Quintet + 1. Again, the ensemble - John Hollenbeck on drums, Drew Gress on acoustic bass, Matt Moran on vibraphone, Ted Reichman on accordion, and Chris Speed on clarinet and tenor sax - are joined by Matt Mitchell on piano.

J21 - BEYOND THE HOLOGRAPHIC VEIL

J21's eagerly-awaited second second album got released earlier this year. "Beyond The Holographic Veil" is another album that needs your attention. As with his previous disc, the list of guests and collaborators is very impressive.
Don Preston takes care of '21° West' and '21°East', the intro and outro of the album. Both tracks are solo synthesizer pieces.
'I Can't Remember' showcases the excellent vocals of Robert Martin; Scott Thunes plays bass on three tracks; 'The Jupiter Trilogy' features Ed Mann (percussion), Andrew Greenaway (speech) and Marco Minnemann (drums), and so on...
But it's not just the list of contributors that's impressive. There's some excellent music to be found on "Beyond The Holographic Veil".
Progressive rock with a twist, leaning heavy on the guitars & vocals.
Superb.
While listening to the album title one should most certainly study the album cover and the liner notes. The album title already suggest that J21 has a different look upon the world.
Here's what the intro to the liner notes add: "Unlike normal photographs, every portion of a piece of holographic film contains all information of the whole. If a holographic plate is broken into fragments, each piece can still be used to reconstruct the entire image. Just like in a hologram we can search for the answers of the questions that the whole universe presents us in each of our atoms. We are the center and the edge of the universe at the same time."
Here's a little sample.

PHI YAAN-ZEK UPDATE

One of the finest discoveries that I made last year, was the music of Phi Yaan-Zek.
Phi Yaan-Zek is a UK guitar player that contributed to Marco Minnemann's "Normalizer 2" series with his "Dance With The Anima" album.
Zappa-inspired, guitar oriented compositions...
In a recent newsflash, Phi Yaan-Zek says that his companion CD to the "Dance With The Anima" album will be ready early next year.
It'll be entitled "Deeper With Then Enima", and will contain 14 tracks.
Wowie Zowie. Can't wait...

GRUPPO SPORTIVO - THE SECRET OF SUCCESS

Hans Vandenburg's Gruppo Sportivo made name in the late seventies as a fun rock band. Everybody should have their first two albums.
One of these included a track called 'Superman', and it incorporated Zappa's 'Take Your Clothes Off'.

Gruppo Sportivo still exists, and the band released a new album recently: "The Secret Of Success". The formula is still there: guitar orientated pop songs, female vocalists,...
It's not the Gruppo Sportive from the first albums as it lacks the fun element, but it's still an okay album.

And, yes, this is the same Hans Vandenburg that did some concerts as The Rubbers Of Prevention...

STUCKY - LIVE 1985 - 2010

  • stucky: live
    (2011, cd, ger, traumton 4548) - incl. 'i'm the slime' (f.zappa)

Erika Stucky's biography reads like a novel: born in the sixties in San Francisco; from Swiss parents, and they all moved back to Switzerland in the seventies ; Erika studied drama and jazz in Paris ; started The Sophisticrats in 1985...

Do you remember The Sophisticrats? They released this fine album in 1990: "Four Singers And Bass" on which they covered Zappa's 'Cosmik Debris'.

And now there's "Live 1985 - 2010", another fine and funny album on which Erika takes on Zappa's 'I'm The Slime'.

Nice. Very nice.

LAZULI - EN AVANT DOUTE

About two months ago, I was one of those lucky people to see a performance of Lazuli at Zappanale. The band took the stage in the middle of the night and played a tremendous show.
Taking a look at their albums, I have to say that, for me, "En Avant Doute" is my favourite. It's the one that I pull out of the shelves the most.
The léode (the guitar like instrument that Claude plays) is prominently featured on "En Avant Doute". By the way, the DVD carries a fine little piece on the how and why of the léode. Fascinating.

Melodic and powerful prog rock. Beautiful.

HUNGRY FREAKS DADDY

The first volume of Scott Parker's "The Recordings Of Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention - Hungry Freaks Daddy" took a look at the years 1959 up to 1969. It got published around 2008.
Last year, Scott already published volume four of the series, entitled "The Hook", about the 1973 - 1974" years, so he is going strong.

But, as you can imagine, mistakes have to be corrected and additions have to be made, so these books are outdated the day that they roll out of the printer.
Hence, this third re-issue of the first volume.
Another new cover (a beautiful one, by Robert Ross), and another bunch of additions.

NEW ZAPPA ALBUM ANNOUNCED

Forty years ago today on October 11, 1971, FRANK ZAPPA & THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION performed two marathon, full-length shows at New York City's famed Carnegie Hall.

This is your ticket directly to the Vault, and to four CDs of the music made THEN and you can have it NOW for the first time since it was first performed LIVE by FZ with Mark Volman, Howard Kaylan, Ian Underwood, Don Preston, Jim Pons & Aynsley Dunbar. The ZAPPA FAMILY TRUST announced the pre-sale today via their www.zappa.com website.

Headed by Zappa's widow GAIL ZAPPA, the ZFT administers exclusively the extensive and iconic legacy of the Composer, Musician, Bandleader and Filmmaker. ZAPPA was posthumously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. Frank Zappa, American composer, was born in 1940 and died in 1993.

Carnegie Hall...warts and all...on Vaulternative Records...in glorious mono. As Gail Zappa says, "We tweaked and we tweezed and did everything possible to be certain this does not sound like a breakfast cereal gone mad somewhere in the Van Allen Belt. I am happy to say The Mud Shark Legend Continues."

J21 - YELLOW MIND : BLUE MIND

Somewhere in 2008, J21 (who one might also know as Joseph Diaz) released "Yellow Mind : Blue Mind" as a download-only album.

"Yellow Mind : Blue Mind" is a great album with an impressive line-up.
Besides J21 on guitar, the album features a.o. Geoff Tyson, Graham Bonnet, Trey Gunn and former Zappa percussionist Ed Mann.

Heavy rock. Instrumental guitar stuff. Except for two tracks that have superb vocals by Graham Bonnet. I love it.
Ed Mann plays mallet and gongs on 'Earth Spiritual Surgery', one of the most impressive tracks on the disc.

And the good news is that the album got picked up by Voiceprint in the UK and that it got a proper CD release in 2009.

The only problem with "Yellow Mind : Blue Mind" is that you won't get it out of your head :-)

ADRIAN BELEW POWER TRIO - LIVE IN GERMANY

July 2006, Adrian Belew headlined the Zappanale festival with his power trio. A memorable performance.
Two years later, the trio (Adrian Belew - guitar ; July Slick - bass ; Eric Slick - drums) performed at the Leverkusen Jazz Festival. The concert got recorded by german TV-station WDR and was made available on DVD on Adrian's private label a little while ago.

An excellent concert that also included some fine King Crimson material.

  • introduction

  • writing on the wall (adrian belew)

  • ampersand (adrian belew)

  • dinosaur (king crimson)

  • young lions (adrian belew)

  • beat box guitar (adrian belew)

  • of bow and drum (adrian belew)

  • e (adrian belew)

  • three of perfect pair (king crimson)

  • thela hun ginjeet (king crimson)

Data & pictures have been added to the United Mutations Archives.

THE METROPOLE ORKEST - ADRIAN BELEW'S E FOR ORCHESTRA (THE CD)

If my data files are correct, Adrian Belew released his 20th solo record in 2009. The album got released on Adrian's private label (Adrian Belew Presents), and it was entitled "e".

The five pieces on the album ('a' to 'e') were recorded live in the studio by the power trio (Adrian Belew - July Slick - Eric Slick), and were a pleasure for the ear.

And now there's this recording by the Metropole Orkest of "e".
Orchestrated by Tom Trapp ('Everybody loves Tom Trapp') and performed by The Metropole Orkest with special guest Adrian Belew, "e" sees a whole new dimension.

This is great. If you liked Adrian's "e", you will love the Metropole's "e".
Check it out. You won't be disapointed.

This is the studio recording. The CD version. There's also a DVD with a recording of the concert that took place a couple of days later. Recorded by the VPRO and broadcast on dutch TV around the same time.

THE METROPOLE ORKEST - ADRIAN BELEW'S E FOR ORCHESTRA (THE DVD)

Adrian Belew has played in Zappa's band, but he has also toured and recorded with David Bowie, with Talking Heads and with King Crimson, to name just a few.
One of his latest adventures, was having his piece 'e' performed by the Dutch Metropole Orkest.
This DVD is a recording of the concert that the Metropole Orkest, with special guest Adrian Belew, did at Paradiso earlier this year.
Really good. I love the energy of Adrian's guitar against the full sound of the orchestra.

Anyone who is familiar with Frank Zappa knows that to successfully present a live rendition of his music is not a venture for the faint hearted. As well as having highly qualified musicians you need guts ambition, dedication and an unstoppable force to drive the whole endeavour.
It looks like we may have found a formula which addresses all these concerns in "Captain Cheesebeard and the 7 sisters of prevention".
A wonderful spectacle of excellent music and comedy just like Frank would have wanted.
The Captain and his Musical Allies have been taking Frank to the people since May 2006 to very favourable reviews and now they are back in Brussels to do their thing at the Atelier 210 on the 5th of November. The Concert will be filmed for an upcoming live DVD release.

The Captain Says" It has been a long time since we played at the Atelier 210, but the place has always had a great ambience, it has always been a treat to play there. This time we will be playing with an evolved line-up, over the year we have had acouple of personnel changes but we are playing very comfortably together now, we are especially excited to have Bart Quartier taking over on Vibraphone duty, he has a serious reputation and it is an honour for us that he was keen to play with us.

It is always a pleasure and a thrill to play in our home town and we are looking forward to putting on a really good performance. Now fasten your seat-belts!"

CABBAGE BOY - THE LOST TAPES, VOLUME 1

In 2004, Cabbage Boy (real name Simon Begg) released 6 demos on his "The Lost Tapes Vol.1".
One of the tracks on this 12" vinyl, is his version of Frank Zappa's 'King Kong'. The track also found its way onto Osymyso's "The Art Of Flipping Channels" (that I mentioned a couple of months ago).
Nice.
Data has been added to the U.M.Archives.

VARGTON PROJEKT - PROGXPRIMETAL

The Vargton Project unites Mats Hedberg (guitars, sitar & ebow), Morgan Ågren (drums & percussion) and Björn Jansson (vocals). Together with an impressive list of guest musicians, this metal power trio fabricated an album that you really need to hear. "ProgXprimetal" says and has it all: progressive, experimental rock music with jazz and eastern influences.
Think Zappa, think King Crimson, think Morgan Ågren.

While I was listening to the album earlier today, I noticed that it completely absorbed me. I was sitting behind the computer, had my headphones on: typing, cutting, copying and pasting. After a couple of minutes I just stopped typing and gave the music my full attention. I had no choice.

Recommended listening.

Check out the soundsamples at www.myspace.com/vargtonprojekt

And you can find more info plus details on where and how to get hold of the album at

DON PRESTON'S CONSTRUCTIONS

Here are a couple of pictures of constructions that were made by Don Preston. Don published these snapshots in his "Don's Store" corner in Facebook.
I think these are beautiful pieces of art & pasted them into Don's entry at the United Mutations Archives.

Don Preston says:
"This is the actual construction that I used a photo of for the CD Escape From 12/2012. The piece is 23 1/4"X 23 1/2" and weighs about 40 lbs."

Don Preston says:
"This is another construction. It is 28"X28" and weighs about 40 lbs. The piece was finished in 2008.
The Bush doll sings and dances."

Don Preston says:
"This is a smaller construction that measures 16"X81/2". It contains a circular light and weighs about 10 lbs."

I was at the Amsterdam show, and it was quite good. A very fine concert hall with excellent sound. You might have noticed that the Amsterdam show did not include Zappa's 'The Perfect Stranger'. Wonder why. But, still quite a good concert.
Driving home after the concert, I made a quick stop in Rotterdam where I picked up two boxes with Zappa and related articles. A gift from Klotz. Great stuff. That'll keep me busy for hours and hours...

TOM ZÉ

Wikipedia says:
Remaining true to the experimental and Dada impulses of Tropicália, Tom Zé has been noted for both his unorthodox approach to melody and instrumentation, employing various objects as instruments such as the typewriter.
He has collaborated with many of the concrete poets of São Paulo, including Augusto de Campos, and employed concrete techniques in his lyrics. Musically, his work appropriates samba, Bossa Nova, Brazilian folk music, forró, and American rock and roll, among others.
He has been praised by avant-garde composers for his use of dissonance, polytonality, and unusual time signatures. Because of the experimental nature of many of his compositions, Zé has been compared with American musicians such as Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart.

If you want to check Tom Zé out in concert, he'll be playing in Belgium and in Holland in a couple of weeks: Ghent, Antwerp, Brussels, Utrecht, Valenciennes, ...
