SUN RA ARKESTRA AT THE LINCOLN CENTER

Sun Ra Turns 100: Sun Ra Arkestra with Marshall Allen

Sun Ra incorporated elements drawn from black vaudeville, modern dance,
Egyptian cosmology, Eastern philosophy, numerology, surrealism, kitsch, and
the Bible to serve a corpus that deployed African rhythms, atonal melodies,
electronic timbres, raw blues expression, unfailing swing, and one-for-all
discipline drawn from the big bands that a internalized in his youth. Sun Ra
lives on in the current edition of the Sun Ra Arkestra, led by alto
saxophonist-woodwindist Marshall Allen.

SUN RA - PATHWAYS TO UNKNOWN WORLDS + FRIENDLY LOVE

Album number 120 in the Sun Ra discography combines combines the 1975 Impulse album "Pathways To Unknown Worlds" (with one bonus track from the same session) plus the unreleased "Friendly Love" album.

Again, a fine album in an excellent package on the Evidence label (dispite the spelling error on the cover).
Robert L.Campbell's liner notes are great and describe both albums as 'cued improvisations'.

Album cover & data have been added to the United Mutations Archives.

ALTROCK TO RELEASE THE NEW HUMBLE GRUMBLE ALBUM

It's called "Guzzle It Up" and it's available through the Altrock website:

http://production.altrock.it/prod2.asp?lang=eng_&id=140&id2=208

SUN RA - THE GREAT LOST SUN RA ALBUMS

The Evidence record label is well-known among Sun Ra enthousiasts. The label has re-issued a number of classic Sun Ra albums that were originally released on Sun Ra's private Saturn label.
Each of these re-issues looks and sounds great.

Around 2000, Evidence released "The Great Lost Sun Ra Albums", a 2CD set that captures "Cymbals" and "Crystal Spears", two albums that were set to be released on the Impulse label somewhere in the mid-seventies. Somehow, these recordings never made it. The story is told in detail in the album's liner notes.

"The Great Lost Sun Ra Albums" includes recordings that were made in New York City in 1973.
Maybe not the most essential Sun Ra release, but definitely worth checking out if you're in to improvised jazz.
Data & album cover have been added to the United Mutations Archives.

AKA MOON - GANESH

If you stumbled upon this blog, and if you're into adventurous music, you should check out Belgian band Aka Moon. Last year, the trio released "Unison", their seventeenth (!!) album.
"Ganesh" got released in 1997 and it relates Aka Moon's exploration of eastern and Indian music. It's one of my favorite Aka Moon albums.
Picture and data got added to the United Mutations Archives earlier today.

JOE SATRIANI, MIKE KENEALLY, VINNIE COLAIUTA, BRYAN BELLER & MARCO MINNEMANN

Here's what they have in common.

from the Joe Satriani website / www.joesatriani.com

MESSAGE FROM JOE

Now that the asteroid has safely passed us by I feel it's time to break my cyberspace-silence and let you all know what I've been up to these last few months.
After returning home from the last of three incredible G3 tours (see soon to be posted "ZZ's fly-on-the-wall/tour movies"), I got down to writing music for a new solo record. A very prolific and cathartic two months followed resulting in a bundle of new music I was very excited to get recorded.

With 16 of the songs selected for the project, all heading in different directions and touching on a variety of musical influences, I realized I needed to assemble a new studio band. The idea was to crank up the energy level of the sessions, and allow for more individual expression of the material, from each player.
I pulled into Skywalker Sound with Mike Keneally on keyboards, Chris Chaney on bass and Vinnie Colaiuta on drums. The chemistry between these awesome players was fantastic, and we blazed through all the tracks with everyone laying down amazing performances.
On Valentine's Day I finally finished all the overdubs, reviewed the tracks with engineer/producer Mike Fraser and started loading out of the studio, elated!
Now it's on to Vancouver, BC, to mix. The new record will be called "Unstoppable Momentum" and should see a release date of May 7th. I'm not sure how many songs will make it to the final sequence as I still have a lot of work ahead of me in that department.

As you can see from the tour page we are gearing up to bring the new music on tour starting in mid-May and continuing through 2013. My touring band will consist of Mike Keneally on keys and guitar, Bryan Beller on bass, and Marco Minnemann on drums. I'm so excited about tearing it up on stage with this new band! See you out there on tour...

-- Joe

FIDOPLAYSZAPPA TO BE RECORDED ON DVD

a message from FIDOplaysZAPPA

Dear FiDO supporter

As you maybe know already, FiDOplaysZAPPA is now on the road again to celebrate its 10th birthday. The last show of their spring-tour on march 21 at Basel's "Gare du Nord" will be filmed (by Sergio Cassini, Swiss TV, 3Sat etc) and released digitally/on dvd in autumn 2013.

To make this project possible, we have started a campaign on the crowdfunding-platform www.wemakeit.ch, where you can support us. You can pre-order a signed dvd, buy some goodies or just donate any amount.

We're all working for little money and have invested hours/days/weeks of work in the last decade, cos we love what we do, otherweise this band wouldn't even exist. Shooting a movie takes a lot of money though - rent of material, cameramen, video editing, audio mixing, dvd-production etc, and is not possible without supporting money. So I'd be very happy to win you over as a supporter for this project!

You'll find an english version by choosing your language in the top menu.

Please forward this mail to any potentially interested people too.

NO CAN DO - TOMORROW'S PAPER

Dutch jazz quartet No Can Do (= Arend Niks, Frans Vermeerssen, Wolter Wierbos & Mischa Kool) released only one album: "Tomorrow's Paper".
Actually, "Tomorrow's Paper" might be considered Arend Niks' 3rd album, following "At Hand" (1993) and "Future Museum" (1997), as he composed most (if not all) of the material.
This is Dutch contemporary jazz / improvised music at its best.

Recommended listening.

SUN RA AND HIS ARKESTRA - JAZZ IN SILHOUETTE

Sun Ra's "Jazz In Silhouette" album got released in 1959 on Sun Ra's private Saturn label. It got distributed to a few record stores and was sold at concerts. Impulse rereleased the album in 1975, putting it on the map, and Evidence put it on CD in 1991.
Since then, "Jazz In Silhouette" has seen various re-editions, both on CD and on vinyl. And that's how it should be as this is one of the classics, if not THE classic.

PANDO - HANDS ON PANDO

"Hands On Pando" is one of these albums that will draw a smile on your face.
It's full of funny, melodic pop songs that will stay in your head all day long.

Pando recorded a number of Zappa compistions for various compilations on the Hall Of Fame record label. "Hands On Pando" does not contain any Zappa compositions, but the influences are present.
Reminds me a lot of Gruppo Sportivo.

I like this a lot.

NIKS PROJECT - FUTURE MUSEUM

Dutch drummer and composer Arend Niks assembled his Niks Project in 1994 when the NPS (Dutch Broadcasting Foundation) asked him to write for and to perform at the "Klap Op De Vuurpijl" festival. The ensemble did a small tour in Holland in 1996, resulting in this beautiful album.

One can hear that Steve Buckley (alto sax), Joost Buis (trombone), Oren Marshall (tuba), Arend Niks (drums), Paul Stouthamer (cello), Frans Vermeerssen (tenor, soprano sax), Eric Vloeimans (trumpet) and Cees van Zeeland (piano) had a lot of fun.
Fine composition (by Arend Niks) and superb improvisations make "Future Museum" an excellent modern jazz album.

Not the easiest album to track down, but if you can find it, it'll be worth your while.

SCUBA Z & ZAPPA

About a month or two ago, I mentioned Scuba Z, the British breakbeat / dance duo, as they used some Zappa themes in their 'Californian Paranoia'.
The track got released as a CDsingle and as a 12".
It can also be found on a promotional 12", and the album that appeared a little later.
Additions to the United Mutations Archives look like this:

the cover of the CDsingle

the promotional 12"

the regular 12" single

the album, "The Vanishing American Family".

THE MUZE JAZZ ORCHESTRA 2013 02 09

The highlight of my previous weekend was the excellent show by The Muze Jazz Orchestra in Heusden-Zolder (B).

I really enjoyed this concert.
Especially the first set was astonishing: an excellent repertoire, intermixed with video snippets that had the band playing with Zappa's 1963 Bicycle Concert, various interviews (N.M.Brock, Steve Vai, Dweezil,...), and even a karaoko version of The Black Page. Fun !!
This is the fourth time that I saw the Orchestra and they just keep getting better and better. And I don't necessarily mean that in a musical sense. The video fragments and the audience participation brought the concert to another level.

The band will be playing in Tienen (B) soon. You might want to go there...

PATRICK VIAN - BRUITS ET TEMPS ANALOGUES

Patrick Vian is the son of French writer, musician and critic Boris Vian. He first gained notability as a member of the progressive rock / protopunk band Red Noise. The band formed at the Sorbonne in 1968, and played its first show during the occupation of the university. According to Vian, these were exciting times. He later commented that in Red Noise's early days, "their concerts wouldn't end until the cops came." The band released one album, Sarcelles - Lochères, in 1970, before breaking up. Given the revolutionary times, the band split rather appropriately into a socialist and a Trotskyist section, the latter of which continued under the name Komintern.

In 1975, Patrick Vian composed some of the music for the film Hu-Man (starring Jeanne Moreau and Terence Stamp) by Jérôme Laperrousaz. In 1976, he recorded "Bruits et Temps Analogues", originally on the Egg label, which was owned by Barclay Records and designed to present young and innovative musicians.

"Bruits Et Temps Analogues" is a very enjoyable album. It mixes experimental electronic music with jazz.  It's hard to imagine why we had to wait almost 40 years to get it rereleased.

ZAPPA ON POSTAGE STAMPS

We've seen Zappa on postage stamps that were issued by countries as Udmurtia and Touva, but did you know that The Democratic Republic of Congo issued a souvenir sheet as well?
Entitled "Les Musiciens Du Rock: Frank Zappa".

As you can imagine, these stamps are fake. Technically, they're called "illegal stamps" as explained here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illegal_stamps

but still, they do look nice.

A SHORT CHAT WITH OSTRICH VON NIPPLE

I'm not really into lists and stuff, but if anyone would ask me to name a couple of essential albums of 2012 Ostrich Von Nipple's "Plays Some Shitty Tunes" would certainly be among them.
Here's another short chat with O.

UniMuta : Dear O.,
Your latest release, "Ostrich Von Nipple Plays Some Shitty Tunes", sounds fascinating. I love the strange and peculiar sounds that you use. It's like looking at an alien world.
I have to admit that I am not familiar with the music of Shitty Bedford. He's also part of The Goons Of Waxing Gibbous, right? Can you tell me a bit about the link between Shitty Bedford's musical world and yours?

Ostrich Von Nipple : You are correct, Mr. Bedford is a core member of the (sometimes) band "The Goons of Waxing Gibbous".  However, my collaborations with him go back further than that.  Originally it was r0b0t, Bedford, and The Chief hanging around making some noise as "Greener than Lou".  I joined them for a show at a house party playing keyboards and turntables.  I also served as the "emcee" for this event, introducing every song to the audience as "Southern Fried Nipple".   This party also served as an origin for some of our current personas.  We all decided to come up with names for ourselves on the fly.  Thus, "Ostrich Von Nipple" was born.  Later r0b0t, Bedford and I started writing tunes in an unnamed ensemble.  Eventually we all teamed up and brought in other members to form "Sneaky-Dink and the Six Times Four is Twenty-Four's".  The group finally morphed into "The Goons of Waxing Gibbous".  One day after a rehearsal Bedford came up and told me he'd love to hear some OVN solo music.  It got me thinking and working.  That work eventually became my self-titled CD.  We continue to work together on projects to this day.

UniMuta : I tell everyone who's in to The Residents, that they should check out your music. The Residents' influence is obvious and the result is astonishing. What music do you listen to?

Ostrich Von Nipple : I'm usually working on new material and obsessively listening to rough mixes.  When I get an opportunity to hear other music, I prefer to listen to 1950's-1960's Disney soundtracks (from animated films), classical Hindustani Ragas, The Bee Gee's and Shitty Bedford (of course).

UniMuta : I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that Nolan Cook contributed to the album. He has a very distinctive sound. One that fits perfectly to the music that you create.
How does this work when you write or arrange a piece? Do you know in advance how a piece should sound? Or what a guest musician should add?

Ostrich Von Nipple : It varies from song to song and artist to artist.  At times I have something specific in mind for Nolan.  Other times I simply ask him to "go for it".  He usually nails the piece in such an unexpected way.  On the rare occasion that I go back to him for changes they are usually minor changes.  I have complete trust that he will deliver something appropriate and exciting and it makes the process an easy one.  Most of the other guest artists are closer to me geographically.  Therefore, the general approach is to get together and work out an idea that one of us has been nurturing.

UniMuta : "OVN Plays Some Shitty Tunes" got released on the German Psychofon Records label. How did you get in contact with them?

Ostrich Von Nipple : Actually I was approached out of the blue by Psychofon.   Initially they contacted me to see about re-releasing older material (the first OVN CD).  At the time I was not interested in that.  However, I mentioned that I had just finished work on an EP of "cover" songs and asked if they would like to give it a listen.  Psychofon listened to the rough mixes and seemed to really enjoy the material.  It grew from there.  When I started the project I had no intentions of releasing it.  At most, it was meant to be gift for Bedford.  I find it interesting to see all the physical products created around something that was never really meant to be heard.

UniMuta : Your previous album got released by WMRecordings, this new one by Psychofon Records. Both are European labels. A coincidence?

Ostrich Von Nipple : That is a mere coincidence.  I am grateful to both labels for all their support and I love the open attitude Europe has towards underground music.  Psychofon has done an outstanding job with all of their OVN products.  I am thrilled that the EP has been handled artistically and with great care.

UniMuta : I was happy to see that "OVN Plays Some Shitty Tunes" got released on an old-fashioned CD. Is it important to you that it got a CD-release, or is the download-option more significant to you?

Ostrich Von Nipple : It was very important that if we were going to do an official release of this EP that it would be available on CD.  I still believe that the way a recording is packaged influences the musical experience.  I also prefer to buy actually CD's whenever possible.

UniMuta : Wise words. Thank you.

Ostrich Von Nipple's excellent album is available from Psychofon Records :

WHERE'S THE BEER AND WHEN DO WE GET PAID?

Sigrun Köhler und Wiltrud Baier's made a documentary about Jimmy Carl Black entitled "Where's the Beer and when do we get paid?".

The movie is scheduled to appear in cinemas next November.

"WHERE'S THE BEER AND WHEN DO WE GET PAID?"

"Don't ask me, what the sound is. You have to hear it!" Als er mit siebzehn Jahren bei einem Elvis-Konzert die Mädchen reihenweise in Ohnmacht fallen sah, wußte er, daß er Musiker werden wollte. Reich ist er dabei nicht geworden.

"To tell you the truth, I don't like to play the drums that much anymore. It's too hard a work, man. But I need the money."
