ZAPPANALE 2017 - PART 04 - FAMILIAR STUFF AND NICE DISCOVERIES

As always, there's bands that you know and have heard or seen before, but each Zappanale there are a couple of bands that you probably never have heard about and that will blow your socks off.
It's the combination of familiar stuff and nice discoveries that makes Zappanale great.

When discussing this with my friends, I tell them that there's one band that really needs to play at Zappanale and that's Flat Earth Society.
This 14-piece Belgian big band combines avant-garde, eclectic compositions with superb technical skills.

And the band comes with extras as a lot of the musicians are part of other fine groups and ensembles: Pierre Vervloesem, Teun Verbruggen, Michel Mast, Bart Maris and Bruno Vansina (to name a few) all have very interesting projects going on.
Guitar player Pierre Vervloesem should need no introduction. He's a band on his own.
Drummer Teun Verbruggen has numerous experimental projects going on;
Saxophone player Michel Mast performs the music of Raymond Scott with one of his ensembles;
Trumpet player Bart Maris performs solo with loop stations and has too many projects.
Saxophone player Bruno Vansina has a new project called Orchestra Exotica (with music by Martin Denny, Les Baxter,...)

Sure, Zappanale is not a 'big' festival with unlimited financial resources but Zappanale can offer fun times and the best crowd there is.

Did I tell you that Flat Earth Society has a program and an album called "Terms Of Embarrassment", their sort of tribute to Frank Zappa?

So here's the deal. If you know someone who's part of FES (Flat Earth Society), tell them that they should play at Zappanale !

CHARLES BOBUCK - NINETEEN-SIXTY-SEVEN

  • charles bobuck: ninenteen-sixty-seven
        (2017, cd, austria, klanggalerie gg248)
Charles Bobuck, composer for The Residents, was nineteen years old in 1967.

Here's what the liner notes say :

The all-new album by former Residents composer Bobuck. Based on the H. Fox story, “O-bay Scooplaws and the Summer of Love.” O-bay Scooplaws was one of the thousands of bands who pilgrimaged to San Francisco in 1967 with hopes of making it big. O-bay Scooplaws was one of the thousands of bands whose dreams were smashed like a Peter Townsend guitar. "We planned to leave for California at midnight hoping for lighter traffic and avoidance of the excruciating heat the Southern Route is so famous for. But it was nearing 2:30 and the truck still did not have the drum set loaded. There was a nervousness in the air. Our parents had seen us off hours ago, telling us to be careful, the usual things they say when they finally accept that they no longer have any say in what their children are going to do. I started out in the cab. We listened to the all-night radio stations as we crossed the country. My turn to be in the back came somewhere in Arizona. It didn't go so well for me as I found the isolation and the flapping tarp challenging my mental state. I tried to sleep as best I could. When we arrived in San Francisco we had no real plans other to be a part of what was happening and try to get gigs. The only place we knew about in San Francisco was the Jefferson Airplane house on Fulton Street across from Golden Gate Park. The band members all lived in this huge mansion. It was famous. So we went there. That sounds silly from today's standards, but in that time, it made perfect sense. We stammered trying to explain who we were and why we were there, even though we knew the only explanation was that we were lost children who had no place to go. But before we could say more, the man put a finger to his lips to quieten us and then motioned us into the house. We only stayed one night. Their manager found us a flat the next day. I bought a tape recorder and started learning how to use it by setting lyrics of some of my favorite songs from 1967 to new music. I saw it as a way of hearing these lyrics fresh again, of understanding deeper meanings in what was being said. Now it is fifty years later, 2017. Klanggalerie thought it was time to release my old recordings as a way of paying tribute to those golden times."

  1. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
  2. Memphis Blues again
  3. California Dreaming
  4. All you need is Love
  5. She's a Rainbow
  6. White Rabbit
  7. I almost cut my Hair today
  8. Mr. Tambourine Man
  9. Holiday
  10. The Sound of Silence

ZAPPANALE 2017 - PART 03 - MOON ZAPPA

Moon Zappa was invited by the Arf Society to attend Zappanale.
It didn't happen, for one reason or another, but Moon did do two live Skype interviews during Zappanale.
The first one was on Friday, on a big screen at the exhibit.
'Non-music' topics included the groupies that lived in Zappa's basement at his family house and Moon talking about the children that Frank had with other women...
(Yes, you heard it right. There are other sibblings...)

Moon Zappa sort of promised to visit Zappanale next year. We'll see.

Here's more Moon :

ZAPPANALE 2017 - PART 02 - DWEEZIL ZAPPA

Dweezil Zappa's "Zappa Plays Zappa" was the headliner for Zappanale.
I've seen the band over ten times already so I thought that I knew what to expect...

The band featured:
  • Dweezil Zappa: guitar, vocals
  • Scheila Gonzalez: saxophone, flute, keyboards & vocals
  • Chris Norton: keyboards, vocals
  • Kurt Morgan: bass, vocals
  • Ryan Brown: drums, vocals
plus new faces :
  • Cian Coey: vocals
  • David Luther - saxophone, guitar, keyboards, vocals
And Cian and David are not just the new pretty faces. David plays a mean bass or baritone saxophone and both Cian and David have a great voice !!

Add special guest Ike Willis for some vocal backings and a bit of lead on a couple of songs and you've got the Zappanale line-up.

The band played a three-hour set and it was superb: excellent musicians, great vocals, nice guitar work from Dweezil,... I loved it.
  • Filthy Habits
  • Help I'm A Rock > Transylvania Boogie
  • It Can't Happen Here
  • You're Probably Wondering Why I'm Here

ZAPPANALE 2017 - PART 01

For the uninitiated :
Zappanale is a music festival that celebrates the music of Frank Zappa. It takes place once every year in Bad Doberan, a small town in the north of Germany.
Draw a horizontal line on the map, 200 km to the right of Hamburg, and you're there.
It's a pretty little town. The 'Bad' thing refers to hot water baths and spa and wellness things. But that's for the other 51 weeks of the year.

The last couple of years, the Zappanale festival kicked off on Wednesday with
 a) an opening concert in Hamburg's St.Katharinenkirche (where they have an organ that Bach once played) ;
 b) an opening of the expo at the Arf Society Headquarters in Bad Doberan.

I've been doing the Hamburg concerts since they started in 2008. Especially since it makes a perfect stop, cutting my trip to Bad Doberan in two parts.

On Tuesday, there's always a kick off party in the park of Bad Doberan. It usually starts at 16h00 and features some local bands and sometimes a couple of surprises.
It's a free kick off / warm up event that starts with about ten and ends with a couple of hundred people.
The park is in the center of the town. About one hundred meters from market place. It's all very small and cosy.

Friday to Sunday, the festival takes place at the horse race tracks (galopprenbahn) which is about five kilometes away from the town center.
It starts about 15h00 every day, and ends way too late (for the old folks).
Also from Friday to Sunday, there's concerts in the expo room. Actually, the expo room (located at the BD market place) consists of three rooms, one of which is also used as a concert room. It can only host about thirty people but it's always a lot of fun.
The festival itself has bands performing the music of Frank Zappa, or bands that have been inspired by Frank Zappa, or bands that take a similar eclectic approach to music.
As a bonus, some of the musicians also perform as a guest musician with other bands.

It's fun.
You should try it. At least once.
Below is a clip of Le Bocal. They have performed a couple of times at Zappanale already.
Their setlist included both Zappa and original material. In 2014, Robert Martin joined them on stage for a couple of songs.

MARK PINSKE

Mark Pinske was Frank Zappa's sound engineer from 1980 until 1987.
Once every while he posts mp3's of stuff that he recorded.
He recently added a couple of Zappa tracks :

from Zappateers :

PHISH - 07/18/2017 NUTTER CENTER, DAYTON, OHIO

Yesterday, (yesterday !!!) Phish performed FZ's 'Peaches And Regalia' during their concert at the Nutter Center in Dayton Ohio.
As it goes with Phish performances, a dowload of the recording of the show is offered for sale shortly after the concert. In this particular case, the show is also being made available on CD.
I like that.

STEVE VAI - MODERN PRIMITIVE

In 2001 (or was it 2002?), Steve Vai released "The Secret Jewel Box", a box that was to contain 10 discs. The latest addition to this box is "Modern Primitive", the album that got released as a package with the 25th anniversary edition of "Passion and Warfare" last year.

The CD has got the letter "H" printed on the spine.
Eventually, all the albums together will spell out "LIGHT w/o HEAT".

"Modern Primitive" is a superb album.
It's the missing link between "Flex-Able" and "Passion and Warfare" and those remain two of my all-time favourite albums.
In the liner notes, Steve says: '... the material on Modern Primitive was mostly written or recorded when I was between the ages of 23-26. And now, a 55-year-old Steve Vai is completing this material, hence the name Modern Primitive.'
Featuring Mike Keneally and Tommy Mars !
One track co-written by Tommy Mars and another one by Bob Harris !

VARIOUS ARTISTS - GOD OWES US A SWIMMING POOL

Next to being the best album title that I've ever heard, "God Owes Us A Swimming Pool" is a fine showcase / sampler for the Heaven Hotel record label.
You will get a taste of Mitsoobishy Jacson, Kiss My Jazz, Ow, Rudy Trouvé, Franco Saint De Bakker, and many more.
All released on the Heaven Hotel record label the last twenty years.

ED PALERMO BIG BAND IN CONCERT

The Ed Palermo Big Band will be doing two shows next Monday,
July 17, 2017 at the 'Iridium' in NYC.

OW - MOON TAN

Fans of dark, psychedelic rock should definitely check out Belgian band OW.
The band consists of Jan Stoop (bass), Chris Wauters (drums), Thomas Noppe (guitar) and Elko Blijweert (keyboards). Guests include Sigrid Van Rosendaal (trumpet) and Frans Van Isacker (alto sax and bass clarinet).
A couple of these musicians can also be found on the Franco Saint De Bakker albums.
The big difference is that OW is more psychedelic and darker.
"Moon Tan" was their second (and last) album.

Does it show that I'm selecting music for my road trip to Zappanale?

ZAPPA ON ZAPPA

VARIOUS ARTISTS - THE FUNDAMENTAL HYMNAL

In 1989, Austrian record label Save (or Fundamental Safe) released an album by Camper Van Chadbourne, the collaboration between Camper Van Beethoven and Eugene Chadbourne. The album included 'Zappa Medley', Camper and Eugene's take on a some old Mothers material.
The same track got released on a sampler, "The Fundamental Hymnal", later the same year.

Ten years later, the Knitting Factory record label re-released part of the Camper Van Chadbourne album as "Used Record Pile", also including the 'Zappa Medley'.

JIMMY LESLIE & FRIENDS - LIVE DOWNTOWN

Another addition to The Others Of Invention : http://www.united-mutations.com/z/frank_zappa/fz_ooi_albums.htm

Jimmy Leslie & Friends recorded Frank Zappa's 'My Guitar Wants To Kill Yer Mama'. It can be found on their "Live Downtown" album.

MITSOOBISHY JACSON - BOYS TOGETHER OUT RAGEOUSLY

Here's more musical madness from Belgium. The Mitsoobishy Jacson project started in 1996.
At the time, Mauro Pawlowski and Peter Houben each had their own band. Mauro had Evil Superstars, and Peter Houben had Nemo. In 1996, they joined forces and released "Nougat In Koblenz" as Mitsoobishy Jacson.
Three years later, Pascal Deweze (Metal Molly) and Guy Van Nueten (The Sands) joined the band and the quartet released "Boys Together Out Rageously".
(Not to be confused with Girls Together Outrageously, the Frank Zappa project from 1969.)

FRANCO SAINT DE BAKKER - LIVE AT THE ANCIENNE BELGIQUE III

Described as 'the ultimate jazz terror combo', Franco Saint De Bakker released their third (and latest) album in 2010. Lots of catchy, jazzy tunes. Influences range from movie themes to South African guitar lines.
Check it out. It'll make you happpy.

Did I tell you that the ensemble also does a fine version of 'Louie Louie' ?

BRUCE BICKFORD - MR BICKFORD DISCOVERS A NEW LAND

Earlier this year, the city of Ulm (in Germany) hosted an exhibit of Bruce Bickford's artwork, curated by Tommi Brem.
It took place from March 11 until June 18 at the City Hall.

Publisher Topalian Milani released a beautiful catalogue to accompany the exhibit.

Not only does the book present a couple of nice articles and interviews (both in English and in German) plus excellent samples from artist's career, but it's also a very impressive publication: 100 pages, bound, superb pictures on beautiful paper,...
I love it.

Available from Topalian Milani, but also from your local bookshop !
http://www.topalian-milani.de/herr-bickford-entdeckt-ein-neues-land/

NASA NA - LIVE 91

In 1989, jazz club 'De Kaai' opened in Brussels. One of its co-founders was guitarist and composer Pierre Van Dormael.
Every Wednesday, from 1989 to 1992, Pierre Van Dormael would take the stage with Fabrizio Cassol, Michel Hatzigeorgiou and Stéphane Galland to perform his compositions.
The quartet was called Nasa Na Group, later shortened to Nasa Na.
When the group broke up in 1992, Fabrizio Casso, Michel Hatzigeorgiou, Stéphane Galland made a trip to central Africa to visit the AKA pygmee tribe. They returned and formed Aka Moon.

"Live 91" presents a recording of the Nasa Na Group. It's obvious that Pierre Van Dormael has a very important role. The band is playing his compositions and he's also taking the lead in the improvisations. Superb material.
And yet, the sound of the trio that would become Aka Moon is already very present.

"Live 91" is a beautiful tribute to Pierre Van Dormael. Hard to believe that this is a recording from 25 years ago.

Essential listening !!
I want to hear more !!

BUBBLEMATH - SUCH FINE PARTICLES OF THE UNIVERSE

Last week, I mentioned the latest Bubblemath album, "Edit Peptide", that got released by the Cuneiform label.
Actually, "Edit Peptide" is the band's second album. Their first one, "Such Fine Particles Of The Universe" is also worth checking out. It's from 2002 and it was not released on a label, but by the band itself.
Lucky for us, it's still available !!

Avant prog-pop jazzcore. Constantly changing odd meters; dynamic song structures and textures; vocal harmonies; unexpected melodies, chord changes, and harmonic voicings; quality lyrics; quirky humor.

Essential listening !

DOCTOR DARK - AFT ERA REST

April 2011, after a couple of years of silence, Doctor Dark reformed.

  • Bill Sanders: vocal
  • Will Inauzzi: bass, keyboards
  • Joseph Nolan: guitar
  • Travis Moody: guitar
  • Stephen Chillemi: drums

August 2012, they performed a fabulous set at Zappanale. The concert featured special guest Gary Lucas.

The band had brought the above pictured album, "Aft Era Rest", along to Zappanale. A very impressive 9 track album. All Beefheart material.

NEW ALBUM BY FORMER RESIDENTS COMPOSER CHARLES BOBUCK OUT TODAY

The new album is called "Nineteen-Sixty-Seven" and you can read all about it here :
http://www.klanggalerie.com/gg248

HARDY FOX SPEAKS

Fans can send questions to Hardy Fox (co-founder of The Residents). He answers them in his newsletter :

Here's a sample, and no, I did not send in this question.

Q: I've always noticed various nods to Frank Zappa's music and ideas throughout The Residents' (and Bobuck's) careers. What are your favorite Frank Zappa albums, or at least the ones that had the biggest influence?

Hardy Fox : Actually neither Bobuck nor myself own any Zappa albums, but we did hear some of the early ones and I saw him live once. I know who Susie Creamcheese is. To be honest, I haven't noticed any "nods" to Zappa. I don't think there is any conscious influence other than the general influence of music floating around in the air. But the album that was most shocking to me was "Freak Out." It was so terrible and wonderful at the same time. While not owning them, I have heard and enjoyed Lumpy Gravy, and Uncle Meat. Oh, also Hot Rats. I worked with Don Preston from the Mothers, who is a speculator musician.

The question above yours is asking the same thing about the influence of Nilsson. There are maybe a hundred composer/performers we have considered amazing, and hundreds more that had their moments. But there was never anything like, "oh let's do a Moondog style tune" type of thing. Musicians do what they do as a result of a constant bombardment of culture. There is no way to escape influence, but then, there is no reason to want to escape.

RUSS STEDMAN - PENALTY TRACKS

Last year, Russ Stedman started an Indiegogo campaign to get his "Grumpy Lazy" album released.
Supporters got "Penalty Tracks".
The album counts 9 tracks. 9 powerful guitar tracks.

Title number two is a fine rendition of Frank Zappa's 'Montana' with an excellent distorted guitar solo.
It sounds great !

MOVIE / DOCUMENTARY - STUPOR MUNDI

December 2013, Sycomore Films started a crowdfunding campaign for a movie called "Ritual Of Pope Decapitation".

Sycomor adds:
The movie was born of our meeting with the producer Xavier Filliol, great connoisseur of the Freaks and friend of Carl Franzoni. Xavier Filliol introduced us to Gail Zappa in Los Angeles, who was very enthousiast in watching our movies. She gave us her consent and support to use musical materials from her husband. The crowdfunding campaign of December 2013 had to cover the investments in new shootings and post production costs. The minimum amount required was 35 euros. As a counterpart of this support, contributors received a box of 4 DVDs with 52 episodes of the serie The Apparatus. If contributors gave 50 euros or more, they'd also get the DVD of Ritual of Pope Decapitation. With this campaign, with your support (over 500 contributors), we reached the amount of 32,000 euros.

One year after, following shootings and a long editing time, we realized that we won’t « put our elephant in a shoe box ». So, it’s not one but 4 movies that we decided to release, gathered under the title STUPOR MUNDI. The topic is not only Zappa and the Freaks but « A History of EVERYTHING (and its monsters) ». And since last April, the two first episodes have been screened at several festivals.

To be quite  honest, I had forgotten all about this documentary and its crowd funding campaign. I did remember receiveing the box set with "The Apparatus" episodes in 2014, but the package with "Stupor Mundi" that arrived last week came as a surprise.
The box can hold 2 DVDs, but only 1 DVD was included. This disc presents the first two movies : "Ritual Of Pope Decapitation" (a reference to pope of LSD Timothy Leary, who has his head stored in a fridge somewhere), and "Men Who Devoured The Mountain" (being the yuppies who took over Hollywood and the music industry and everything else).
A film by Thomas Bertay and PacômeThiellement. Music by Frank Zappa.

Not the easiest stuff to watch but very impressive.
Includes interviews with Frank Zappa, Gail Zappa, Carl Franzoni (one of the early L.A. freaks) and Trey Spruance (of Secret Chiefs 3), plus some concert fragments of Zappa's band.

Great package with a superb cover mixing a shot of the "Freaks" movie with FZ's yawning face from "Chunga's".
Can't wait to see the sequel.

Those who missed the original crowdfunding, can still order this documentary.

AKA MOON FEAT. PIERRE VAN DORMAEL

New album, with recordings from 1991.
Out on Outhere Music.

https://www.outhere-music.com/nl/albums/nasa-na-out-659

The group NASA NA, made up of Pierre Van Dormael, Fabrizio Cassol, Michel Hatzigeorgiou and Stéphane Galland was formed in 1989 at the time of the opening of ‘De Kaai’, the legendary Brussels jazz club. There, all risks were permitted, and a series of musicians experimented together with a new kind of music. Initially called NASA NA GROUP, which means ‘I have a group’, NASA NA developed naturally, creating great cohesion between its members.

When the group broke up in 1992, Fabrizio Cassol, Michel Hatzigeorgiou and Stéphane Galland formed AKA MOON, and Pierre Van Dormael would join them on a few occasions for concerts and recordings.

THE SPOTNICKS - RARE COLLECTION

The Spotnicks' recording of Frank Zappa's 'Duodenum', (or (the theme from) 'Lumpy Gravy' as they called it) can be found on various compilation albums.
I recently found another one: this "Rare Collection" 2CD set from 1999.

A fine addition to The Others Of Invention, musicians performing the music of Frank Zappa;

CARL KING - GRAND ARCHITECTS OF THE UNIVERSE

In the meantime, Carl King's "Grand Architects Of The Universe" arrived. I had been listening to the download, but having the actual CD in your hands, does have that someting extra.
A superb musical science-fiction epos that features Dweezil Zappa, Mike Keneally, Phi Yaan-Zek, Marco Minnemann and Morgan Ågren, just to mention the most familiar sounding names.

Excellent.
http://carlkingdom.com/

EUGENE CHADBOURNE - THE HILLS HAVE JAZZ

Next to his enormous output on CDR, Eugene Chadbourne does have albums released by record labels as well.
One of these is "The Hills Have Jazz".
In the liner notes, Eugene tells the story of how he visited L.A., got to borrow Wes Craven's vintage Gibson acoustic guitar, and of how he and Richie invited a couple of L.A. jazz musicians to participate in the recordings.
Great reading and the music's even better.

Recommended listening !!

eugene chadbourne: acoustic guitar
richie west: drums
brian walsh: tenor saxophone
carey fosse: electric guitar
bill barrett: harmonica
dan clucas: cornet, flute

produced by eugene chadbourne
  1. good bait (tadd dameron, count basie)
  2. heavy spirits (oliver lake)
  3. saturn (oliver lake)
  4. 17 west (eric dolphy)
  5. noonah (roscoe mitchell)
  6. space jazz reverie (sun ra)  !!
  7. miss toni (eric dolphy)
  8. miles' mode (john coltrane)

Here's a bit of Eugene Chadbourne, plus experimental duo Zu :

DOC CHAD CONTEMPORARY ROCK BAND - OLD DOG

Eugene Chadbourne released two album by his Doc Chad Contemporary Rock Band last year. Both present recordings of the tour he did with Jan Fitschen (bass, baritone guitar) and Dieter Schroeder (drums).
This is a great show. Great musicians and funny as well.
Eugene mentions Jimmy Carl Black in the lyrics of 'I Used To Be Somebody'.
It includes Sun Ra's 'The Satellites Are Spinning' in the set list.

http://www.eugenechadbourne.com/

FRANCO SAINT DE BAKKER - LIVE AT THE ANCIENNE BELGIQUE II

A couple of years after "Live At The Ancienne Belgique" (a concert hall in the city of Brussels), Franco Saint De Bakker released the follow-up, aptly called "Live At The Ancienne Belgique II".

No Sun Ra classics or Raymond Scott tunes this time, but another fine selection including a number of excellent original compositions.
I really like 'Saar van de Leest's 'Sarly's Theme' !!

THE KLEPTOMATICS

Yves Peeters' Kleptomatics.

Rob Banken: alto sax
Peter Delannoye: trombone
Berlinde Deman: tuba
Loïc Dumoulin: trumpet
Thomas Mayade: trumpet
Yves Peeters: drums
Bruno Van der Haegen: tenor sax

All names that you've heard before when bands like Flat Earth Society, Nordmann, DelVitaGroup, Manngold de Cobre, Yves Peeters Gumbo or the Opus 2 Brass Band were mentioned.

Wonder if they know any Zappa tunes? That should be fun !!

MILLIONAIRE - SCIENCING

Did I already mention the brand-new Millionaire album?
In times where one gets satured by info by e-mail, by facebook, by twitter and whatever else, it's hard to differenciate the informative messages from the garbage. Let alone keep track of the interesting info.
The large quantity of info also causes today's news being old news tomorrow.

So let me get back to the new Millionaire album.
"Sciencing" is a very impressive album. I've been playing it a lot the last couple of weeks.
Straightforward, contemporary rock.
The album has 12 songs on it and they're all quite different although they all bear the Millionaire signature.

The biggest surprise was the opening track, 'I'm Not Who You Think You Are'. The guitar solo (near the end of the song) sounds like it's played by Frank Zappa. Wow. Didn't expect that !

THE CZAR SHOP

BELA BARTOK

It seems like Bela Bartok is getting some renewed attention.
Sinister Sister Announced a number of concerts where they will be performing the music of Bela Bartok in a jazz / rock setting, and more recently, Dialeto has released an album with Bela Bartok compositions.

Out on the MoonJune record label :

FRANCO SAINT DE BAKKER - LIVE AT THE ANCIENNE BELGIQUE

Franco Saint De Bakker is a Belgian collective that unites rock musicians from various bands and ensembles to perform contemporary versions of jazz standards.
The band got formed by Elko Blijweert (Kiss My Jazz, Dead Man Ray, Rudy Trouvé Septet, Gruppo di Pawlowski). Together with Rudy Trouvé, Elko runs the Heaven Hotel record label.
Other members include Saar Van De Leest (Tip Toe Topic, Traktor, Capsule), Joris Caluwaerts (Zita Swoon, Stuff, ...), Sigrid Van Roosendaal (Lionell Horowitz, Rudy Trouvé,...), Karel De Bakker (Dead Man Ray, Manngold,...), Frans Van Isacker (various jazz combos) and Thomas Sainderichin.

Traditional, adventurous, contemporary jazz.
This first release (from 2004 already) includes a beautiful version of Raymond Scott's 'Powerhouse' and a breathtaking 'Angels And Demons At Play' from Sun Ra.

MIDVALE SCHOOL FOR THE GIFTED - OU 1999-2000 SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT

Three students from the Midvale School For The Gifted sent a demo to one Ed Furniture. They blew up their school shortly after that. Ed was impressed and released their demo on an album.

So far the quite funny story behind this Carl King / Sir Millard Mulch project from 2000.
The album is quite good so it had to be added to the United Mutations Archives.
Experimental / avant garde rock !

VARIOUS ARTISTS - KRACHTVOER

"Krachtvoer" (powerful food) is a book about / is a tribute to Dirk van der Pijl.
The late Dirk van der Pijl was an inspiring musician and person. In 2008 a couple of his closest friends decided to publish a book as a tribute. This book includes two CD's, beautifully incorportated in the inside of the back cover. As Dirk was the lead singer for White Beans and as White Beans had done a couple of Frank Zappa shows, both of the discs have a couple of tracks of the White Beans performing Zappa.
A couple of these tracks have been previously available on a couple of White Beans albums, but another three Zappa tunes are unique to this release.

A beautiful tribute. Both to Dirk van der Pijl and to his affection for the music of Frank Zappa.

TEDDY & HIS PATCHES

Somewhere in 1967, Teddy & His Patches released a 7" with 'Suzy Creamcheese' on the A-side.

No coverversion of a Zappa tune, but an original composition that uses some FZ lines.

wikipedia
... Recording sessions generated two tracks, including "Suzy Creamcheese", a bizarre tune written by Conway and promoter Jerry Ralston.[5] The song was inspired by the opening dialogue—which "Suzy Creamcheese" features Flores mysteriously reciting—taken from the Frank Zappa composition "The Return of the Son of Monster Magnet".

Well, this very rare 7" has recently been reissued. If you take a closer look at the above picture, you can see that it says "reissue" on top.
An illegal reissue? Yes, but with the original going for more than US $ 100, and this reissue being available for about US $ 10.00, it's not that bad a deal.

THE DOC CHAD CONTEMPORARY ROCK BAND - MONKEY BAR

Here's another recent title from Eugene Chadbourne.
The Doc Chad Contemporary Rock Band (Eugene Chadbourne: banjo, guitar and vocals * Jan Fitschen: bass * Dieter Schroeder: drums)

Recorded in concert at the "Monkey Bar", this fine album presents 16 marvellous tracks.
The band is in fine shape and the recording is excellent. Here's the tracklist for the album :

  1. 8 miles high
  2. rockin' in the free world
  3. autumn lullaby
  4. supplies dwindle
  5. after the rain
  6. danger!
  7. happy new year

  12. dirty deeds done dirty cheap
  13. okie from muskogee
  14. drive on
  15. runnin' kind
  16. no reason to quit

Recorded around the same time, but released during the tour, was "Record Story Day". I would have liked to hear that one as well, especially since the band performed Don Van Vliet's 'Lick My Decals Off, Baby' that night. Unfortunately, Doc Chad's hard disc (with this recording) went dead...
If anyone has a copy of "Record Store Day", you could make both me and Doc Chad very happy with a copy ! Get in touch !!

RAN BLAKE - THE COMPLETE REMASTERED RECORDINGS ON BLACK SAINT & SOUL MATE

Remember the Ran Blake / David Fabris "Indian Winter" album? It included their version of Frank Zappa's 'Marqueson's Chicken'. Ran Blake on piano and David Fabris on guitar.
Well, this very album has been re-released (in a remastered edition) as part of the above shown box set.

Another fine edition to The Others Of Invention, bands and artists performing the music of Frank Zappa.

CHEER-ACCIDENT - PUTTING OFF DEATH

  • cheer-accident: putting off death
        (2017, cd, usa, cuneiform records)
Cheer-Accident is an experimental rock band. They have been making music for about thirty years and have released twenty-something albums.
Notwithstanding their 'non-commercial' music and the rapidly changing music industry, the band is still around and has produced a brand-new album.
And despite the title, Cheer-Accident sounds more alive than ever.

"Putting Off Death" collects seven pieces. Not your ordinairy love songs but beautiful, endearing compositions.

01. Language Is
02. Immanence
03. Wishful Breathing
04. Falling World
05. More And Less
06. Lifetime Guarantee
07. Hymn

DR. MUMBAI - THE ADVENTURES OF DR. MUMBAI

Bill Pitts (= Dr. Mumbai) released "The Adventures Of Dr. Mumbai" a couple of years ago.
A beautiful album with lots of nods to Frank Zappa. It features a lot of familiar sounding names : Marco Minnemann, Arthur Barrow, Aaron Arntz, Scheila Gonzales, Bryan Beller, Pete Griffin, Dweezil Zappa (!!), and Billy Hunting.

A fine discovery. Why hadn't I heard of this before?

If I'm well informed, Bill is recording another album. It should feature one Ike Willis...

EUGENE CHADBOURNE - FUCK INDEPENDENCE

Eugene Chadbourne's solo concert at the "Apostisis Festival" in St.Petersburg, Russia.
It includes Doc Chad performing Don Van Vliet''s 'Orange Claw Hammer'.
Great show.

http://www.eugenechadbourne.com/

EUGENE CHADBOURNE - 2017 IWW BAND

Eugene Chadbourne's latest release is entitled "2017 IWW Band".
Besides the fact that this is a very fine album, I should also mention that it includes the band performing Frank Zappa's 'Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance'.
The song starts with a recording of Jimmy Carl Black talking about his early life and then kicks in to a wild version of 'Take Your Clothes Off'.

http://www.eugenechadbourne.com/

THE NICE - COMPLETE BROADCAST TAPE

Here's the data for the bootleg with The Nice that included the BBC Top Gear Sessions with the band performing Frank Zappa's 'Lumpy Gravy'.

BRUCE BICKFORD EXHIBITION CATALOGUE

Good news from the publishing company.
The Bruce Bickford exhibition catalogue (for his expo that is running in Germany right now) should be available to order from June 21 onwards.

The ordering page is setup, but not all the links are working yet.

DIMESLAND - CREEPMOON

The reason for me to check out Dimesland (or to Land Of Thin Dimes as the band was originally called) came from Nolan Cook. Nolan plays the guitar for The Residents. On record and on tour.
During the last years, Nolan Cook's guitar playing has added a very recognisable, typical sound on The Residents' recordings. Clean, long, floating notes. A sound that fits The Residents perfectly.

His work on Dimesland is quite different. Dimesland is a metal band. The guitar is a lot heavier and more energetic. Not something that I would consume on an empty stomach.

"Creepmoon" is a 15-minute mini album that got released in 2012, a couple of years before their latest "Psychogenic Atrophy".

Available from :
http://dimesland.bandcamp.com/

Here's one of their more recent songs. It will give you a pretty good idea of what Dimesland is about.

SNAKEFINGER - CHEWING HIDES THE SOUND

Next to his contribution to various Residents records, and to some Clubfoot Orchestra albums, Snakefinger released three solo albums.
All three, "Chewing Hides The Sound", "Greener Postures" and "Manual Of Errors" have recently been re-released by Klanggalerie.

True, the album is from 1979 and it has been re-released on both vinyl and CD in the late eighties and nineties, but just in case that you don't already have it (or that you need an extra copy), this Klanggaerie re-issue is excellent.
Perfect sound, great package and a couple of bonus tracks (from early singles).

A fine article on Snakefinger :

SIR MILLARD MULCH - HOW TO SELL THE WHOLE F#@!ING UNIVERSE TO EVERYBODY...

Sir Millard Mulch's (or Carl King's) "How To Sell The Whole F#@!ing Universe To Everybody..." is (and I'm paraphrasing) : "the ultimate guide to social metaphysics for salesmen, artists, magicians, and all other types of manipulative fakes & liars".
Hilarious.
Musical madness.
Features Morgan Agren on drums and Lale Larson on keyboards.
Here's a sample :

EUGENE CHADBOURNE - THE DIVINE

"The Divine" got released by Doc Chad in 2016. It offers pieces of the solo concerts that he did at the Beacon in New York and at the Apostisis Festival in St.Petersburg, Russia, plus a couple of tracks with a band.
Fine material, and an excellent choice of tunes !

  1. the look of strumpf
  2. aleucha / salt peanuts
  3. old dog
  4. compared to what
  5. the shreeve
  6. dear lord
  7. monk's dream

  11. drive on
  12. happy new year
  13. if could only fly
  14. hurdy gurdy man
  15. satellites are spinning (sun ra)
  16. ride my see saw
  17. no reason to quit
  18. runnin kind

THE NICE - DIAMOND HARD BLUE APPLES OF THE MOON

August 6, 1968, The Nice (Keith Emberson's band) recorded Frank Zappa's 'Lumpy Gravy' for a BBC Top Gear session.
The sessions got broadcast on August 25 of the same year. The recordings got released in 2002, but could already be found on a bootleg album.
The above pictured album, "Diamond Hard Blue Apples", offers recordings from various concerts and radio sessions from 1968 to 1970. It also includes 'Lumpy Gravy'.

BUBBLEMATH - EDIT PEPTIDE

  • bubblemath: edit peptide
        (2017, cd, usa, cuneiform records)
Minnesota quintet Bubblemath is Kai Esbensen (vocals, keyboards), James Flagg (vocals, drums), Jon Smith (vocals, guitar) and Blake Albinson (guitar, keyboard). "Edit Peptide" is their second album. It follows "Such Fine Particles Of The Universe" that got released in 2002.

Rhythmically challenging, melodically impressive and vocally top notch, "Edit Peptide" is sure to make some eyebrows move. The music is could be considered experimentel progressive, yet it sounds so poppy.
Right up my alley.
I love it.

EUGENE CHADBOURNE - MUSICAL SOUNDS OF GOLD AND PLATINUM

I recently bought another set of albums by Eugene Chadbourne. You may know that Eugene is a perfect example of a contemporary DIY (do it yourself) artist. He writes and performs his own music but he's also not scared to perform pieces by other artists. Music that is part of his history, his life. As Doc Chad has a good taste in music, this usually translates in familiar sounding tunes or fine discoveries. The recognizability depends on the quirky arrangement and/or the instrument that he is playing (guitar, banjo, rake, umbrella,...).
"Musical Sounds Of Gold And Platinum" has Eugene performing solo, in trio, and even with his Doc Chad Contemporary Rock Band.
Lots of great tunes, including Don Van Vliet's 'Orange Claw Hammer'. Very nice.

The CDR comes in the typical unique packaging: recycled / collage LP covers with the info written all over it.
Love it.
